What the hell is wrong with those people?
Mainly, they base their characters on themselves, and, while I can understand that there is a certain juvenile fascination with becoming, even in your dreams, a "blue-haired girl with fairy wings" for some people, it gets very, very, very annoying after a while, not to mention infuriatingly static, bland, boring, and altogether just...despicable.
What's worse is that there is a growing trend in popular fiction wherein the main female character (usually; sometimes a male) is one of these...sickeningly sweet, annoying perky, disgustingly plastic, two-dimensional, cliched, infuriatingly unoriginal things and males apparently are overcome with her ultimate pheromones (or else are entirely brain-dead - most likely the latter) because they fall all over themselves to do God-knows-what for the silly bints.
I mean, honestly, I know that it may be unreasonable for me to expect the shoddy world of pop fiction to meet my (admittedly high) standards, but good God, don't publishing companies have any pride (not to mention pity for the poor readers) anymore? If I wanted to read some ridiculous, almost farcicial piece of shit about a magickal, beautiful fairy princess who got kidnapped when she was younger and put into the real world where she obviously doesn't fit in, etc. I would simply turn on the obnoxious contraption currently known as a television and flip to one of the less-than-substandard channels readily available from any locale in the United States (or so it seems...). That's why some deranged sadist (or moron) came up with the idea for the first soap opera, darlings. When I open a book, is it too much to expect that there be a reasonably intelligent plotline that is NOT full of exasperating, stupid, half-assed bullshit most likely written by a poor, pathetic loser? I used to think that it wasn't, but now I'm really starting to wonder...
And the fact that many of the useless, unrealistic, unintelligent, horrifyingly bad-quality teen-romance novels are among the most popular of the books at a time when such treasures as 7/13 are completely disregarded makes me want to puke. Example? Meg Cabot. Don't start yelling about how great of an author she is just yet. Read more than one of her books (try at least four), and then make a list of the similarities between characters, plotlines, inter-character-relationships, etc. and you'll soon see what I mean when I say that she basically reuses everything. :rolls eyes: Not to mention that the entire degeneration of the novellic world is proving my point in maintaining that the world is going to shit because of the lowering collective intelligence of the human population. Whatever.
This rant is now considered simmering, not closed. Don't set it off again unless you want page-long continuations.

Angels slid in and out of the water like ribbons, gracing our thoughts with the promise of dawn, striking like matches with the edge of the ocean and clashing chords against the inside of the world's wooden heart.
